Finding Meaning in PE - TICKETED EVENT
In this full day pre-conference session, participants will be introduced to key ideas of the Meaningful Physical Education (MPE) approach in the morning, then use their learning as a springboard to dive into reflective practice and practitioner research in the afternoon. MPE embraces the ways physical education can improve the quality of life for young people by finding joy in movement.

In the morning we will present evidence from both research and practice to support the features and principles of MPE. Participants will have opportunities to listen to stories from practice, interact with pedagogical cases and explore MPE based on their own context. The afternoon will engage participants in the shallow end of reflective practice with key concepts, ideas followed by practicing with peer coaching to get them comfortable. We will then move to the deep end where we will inquire into staying afloat professionally using modes of practitioner research targeted on growth and improvement. The day will wrap up with an interactive live podcast.

Intended Learning Outcomes
  • Participants will develop an understanding of meaningful physical education and contextual implementation.
  • Participants will evaluate their own programs from perspectives of meaning and growth.
  • Participants will learn about reflective practice and modes of practitioner research in physical education.
  • Participants will develop initial competencies in peer coaching and reflective practice.

Soccer for Schools - TICKETED EVENT
Soccer in international schools looks very different from soccer played in academies, clubs, or any organized institution outside the school program. The main reason why it is so different is because students are frequently moving from country to country or school to school, and so lack consistent training and correct progressions, which translates into accumulated gaps in their learning over a period of time. Academic pressure in some geographical areas also hinders the appropriate development of every student in the area of sports, and it can impact students’ active lifestyle in both the short term and longer term. The truth is that coaches and teachers can make all the difference in this fluid situation.

If a coach or a teacher understands the dynamics of the international school systems, they will start changing the way they teach and coach soccer to ensure that every single one of their students will grow to love being active, will consistently improve and develop, and will grow to love soccer and transfer those skills to any invasion games situation or life scenario. We, as coaches and teachers, have a greater battle to fight, as our job is harder when we have to cover gaps and bring the enjoyment and the beauty of every game and activity back to life, so that every child would love to play, score, win, while staying active and loving to move.

Learning Outcomes
  • Participants will learn about different teaching models and how they apply to an educational based soccer program.
  • Participants will learn to select the correct activities for their students when differentiating for every individual.
  • Participants will also learn to analyze and assess players as they play and set up a simple assessment activity in order to create their season plan for the students. This way, coaches will develop a “coach’s eye” and be able to not only spot gaps and suggest improvements, but also make the difference between what activity is effective and what activity is not, and how to choose it.
  • Participants will also discuss the main issues that can impact on trying to deliver and implement an effective program and to measure success. Topics will include: time, space, equipment, number of students, administration and behavior management, etc.

Physical Literacy is a theory that has gained incredible momentum in the past decade. As a detailed philosophy we have been discussing it since the late 80’s. But how does physical literacy theory really connect with what we, what YOU do on a day-to-day basis in physical education and sport?

This talk will provide a brief overview of the theory and then introduce an evidence-based framework and exemplars for physical literacy ‘in action’.

What Might Meaningful Physical Education Look Like in the Gym?
This is a practical workshop where participants can experience one teacher's approach to using Meaningful Physical Education in a gym setting.

Participants will learn a novel striking and fielding game (Danish Longball), with the facilitator thinking out loud, as he teaches the game using central ideas about Meaningful Physical Education. In particular, the facilitator will describe how in-the-moment-teaching decisions can be guided by considering the features of Meaningful PE (i.e., social interaction, challenge, fun, motor competence, personally relevant learning) - as well as employing strategies that support pupils' autonomy & reflection.

Affordances for Movement: Using Your Environment for PE
Evidence demonstrates the enormous benefits for mental and physical health that come from being active outdoors and from engaging with one's surroundings. Our programmes teach you how to identify what movement and exercises possibilities are afforded to us by the environment, built structures and natural architecture.

Young people have a natural desire to explore the world around them and apply their physicality to it. Physical education should embrace this desire and utilise it to encourage movement and activity, and to develop an affinity between young people and their environment. School grounds typically provide endless opportunities for movement activities, games and challenges, and with the right training you will be able to guide sessions outdoors safely, smoothly and productively.

An added benefit is the development of respect for their environment among young people, as well as adaptability, resilience and creativity.

Creating Cultures of Thinking In PE
Thinking is the foundation of all learning, be it in a Math, Science, Music or PE classroom. While we often believe that thinking is a natural, innate process, research has demonstrated that our thinking ability can be strengthened and developed through purposeful, targeted instruction, and what is commonly known as 'thinking routines'.

This presentation models ways in which thinking routines can be used successfully in a PE classroom, in order to help students develop their analytical and critical thinking, which ultimately leads to improved physical performance and a healthy outlook on life. Thinking routines enhance students' physical performance while developing their understanding, their ability to make connections, and their problem-solving capacity.

Participants will be encouraged to use thinking routines throughout the presentation and to reflect on their own practice.

A Game Sense Approach to Striking & Fielding
Game Sense is a specific model that has come out of Bunker and Thorpe’s Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) that was “developed in Australia during the mid-1990’s through collaboration with Rod Thorpe and the Australian Sports Commission” (Thrope, 2006 cited by Pill, 2016). Students are presented with specific game challenges that they then solve while playing small sided games with modified rules, this approach is quite different to isolated skills-based from practice and big-group gameplay.

In this workshop, participants will play different Game Sense striking and fielding games that build in tactical complexity and focus on inquiry through teacher questions and problem-solving in various games.

Games include activities based around Kickball, Cricket, Softball and Danish Longball.

Lights, Camera, Action: Practical Ideas to Facilitate Students in Representing their Physical Education Experiences
Insight on how your students are experiencing physical education can help you to plan more meaningful physical education experiences. In this practical workshop, participants will explore a variety of strategies to facilitate their students in sharing aspects of their physical education experiences. Guidance will be provided on how to approach both:
  1. Strategies that can be built across time such as photos, peer interviewing, write and draw, poetry, story writing, and individual and group reflection
  2. More instant strategies, such as post-it feedback, questionnaires, colour bars and circle time.
Samples of student work using these strategies will be shared to discuss how teachers can use the students' thoughts and feelings as a basis for future planning.

Participants will be given the opportunity to try out some of the strategies related to their own participation in some fun, relaxed physical activities.

Keynote: Head in the Clouds and Feet on the Ground: Using Meaningful Physical Education to Support Both Visions & Actions in Physical Education Practice
In this keynote, Tim & Deidre will outline ways in which Meaningful Physical Education can offer a realistic and achievable vision for physical education teaching practice.

Vision refers to a vivid set of images and descriptions that teachers can use to capture what they want their practices to look like and their students to achieve. One of the challenges of having teachers articulate their vision is that it is often too far removed from their daily realities, and therefore difficult to see in action.

The presenters will outline how Meaningful Physical Education can serve as a realistic vision for physical education, describing its aspirations and providing concrete examples drawn from teachers’ actual practices in a variety of contexts.

It is recommended that audience members bring a tablet or laptop during the presentation.

Keynote: Best Practice in Health Education - Constructing Meaningful & Healthful Learning
Health can have different meanings to different people; at different times of their lives, under different circumstances and within different contexts. What one person perceives to be healthy, might not necessarily be considered or valued in the same way by another. Building opportunities for children and young people to explore, investigate and make sense of themselves as healthy is key to supporting safer, healthier and more physically active living. It is critical because our young, no matter where they are globally, are bombarded on a daily basis with challenging and sometimes hurtful and/or harmful health messages.

Meaningful and healthful learning in health education ensures that what is taught in the name of health is intentional. It ensures that what is promoted is contextually relevant and creates a sense of understanding and belonging within the child because it makes sense to them. Meaningful and healthful learning in health education embraces the particular circumstances of each and every individual in inclusive and supportive ways, to promote strengths, resiliency and new ways of healthier living.

In this workshop, participants will play different Game Sense Invasion games that build in tactical complexity and focus on inquiry through teacher questions and problem-solving in various games. Small-sided activities - general Invasion and then building into Touch Rugby specific games and activities. While athletes are playing these games, we will have a focus on the Coaches that are offering observation and constructive conversations to help focus and grow our athletes in game play.

Current Health Issues for International Teens
One of the benefits of a skills-based model is that it gives teachers freedom to adapt content to best suit the unique needs of their student population. This is especially important in an international setting where cultures, values, and laws can vary drastically between countries and schools. In this follow-up to last year’s session, participants will be given tools to add current health concerns- vaping, screen time, body image and social media, etc.- to existing curriculum while maintaining a focus on skills.

Participants will leave with:
  • Tools to gather data on the health concerns impacting their unique student population
  • A bank of adaptable resources to help address current health issues
  • A network of other international teachers passionate about student wellness in the region.

Progressive Soccer Coaching in Middle School & High School
Soccer coaching has been refined over the years to become a precise and complex mélange of science and art. At the same time, high school sports stakes are higher than ever, while students find themselves under the pressure of multiple other academic, social or competitive requirements and commitments. It falls on high school sports coaches to help students reach a performance level that implies the mastery of complex skills and abilities in a short time, while also providing training opportunities that fit the needs of students with various skills and sports experience.

This presentation will describe a fun and inclusive approach to a soccer warm-up purposefully designed to target specific skills, which then evolves in semi-isolated progressive activities addressing multiple explicit goals. This approach leads to a set of complex games, with the goal of improving students’ technical and tactical understanding, as well as other specific areas of skill and knowledge.

Participants will experience first-hand various progressive activities which can be implemented immediately in a lesson, and which lead students to a deeper and more complex tactical understanding of the game of soccer. Due to the high number of activities presented, participants are encouraged to bring phones or cameras to this session.

Using Case Studies to Imagine How Meaningful Physical Education Can Be Employed in Schools & Community Sport Settings
In this session participants will be introduced to the Meaningful Physical Education approach, which is being developed as a way to help teachers prioritize the personal meaning students make and take from their physical education experiences.

There is good deal of evidence to suggest that the personal meaning of physical activity engagement is the key to lifelong participation. Main features and characteristics of the Meaningful PE approach will be briefly presented, including excerpts from teachers’ experiences of experimenting with the approach in their classrooms.

The bulk of the session will entail participants working collaboratively through pedagogical case studies, where authentic situations capturing ideas about Meaningful PE are presented. This will build on initial ideas introduced in the Keynote Presentation, therefore enabling participants to engage with concepts and practical applications in greater depth and detail. Participants will be asked to critique the cases and apply situations to their own physical education teaching practice or community coaching.

Finding That ‘Just Right’ Challenge
This workshop will be devoted to sharing a specific structure that can be used to deeply unpack what finding the ‘just right’ challenge means to each student in PE. There is no question that when students are challenged in a way that allows them to identify their own entry point to learning, they can find more flow and more joy in their own learning.

A quick and efficient self-assessment strategy will be shared in this workshop that can be used in any unit taught in PE. Come and join the fun in this workshop and maybe even find your own entry point to learning!!

Introducing Invasions Games to Early Childhood Students
Early Childhood is an extremely important age in the development of any child. It can set the child up for success or failure later on in life, as it can affect all that the individual can and will do later in Elementary and Middle school, and will set the stage for life. Research indicates that there are some critical soft skills a child needs to acquire before being able to receive content and use it effectively in multiple environments and subject areas. Some of these soft skills are self-regulation, executive functioning, creativity and problem solving.

During this session, we will explore how introducing invasion games in a fun and creative way will not only help students learn to self-regulate, use their imagination, and begin to be exposed to reflection and planning, but will also allow students to use a large variety of locomotor skills in a very isolated environment and develop to more complex situations where they have to plan and make decisions. During the session, teachers will see how students are being moved from a step by step, guided instruction, to a student led activity, in which young students will have to make decisions and plan reflect on their outcomes.

Multiple engaging activities will be presented for students at the age of 3 and 4, using limited equipment. At the end of the session, we will briefly discuss some of the more efficient ways to convey any physical education lesson in pre-school, and how important it is to have a teacher that understands this critical age in the development of the whole child in life.

How to Integrate Stress-Management and Mental Health Into Your Health Classes Right Now
Today's teens are anxious and stressed. The pressure to keep up- both in school and online- has led to a mounting mental health crisis in universities worldwide.

A focus on ‘positive prevention’ and healthy coping skills- rather than high-risk behaviors- can equip students with the tools they need to thrive. In this session, we’ll be discussing strategies and resources for teaching stress management that work.

Participants will leave with:
  • A unit plan to teach stress management and healthy coping skills
  • A tool-kit of scientifically proven happiness-boosting activities students can use right away

Closing Inspiration: Inspiring Physical Activity for Life
Physical activity and movement can light up the lives of the students that we teach. As physical educators, we must strongly advocate for each student’s fundamental need to experience joy through movement. Our programs must be designed in a way that allow all students to flourish and to find greater meaning in their lives through physical activity. In a day and age when mental health issues have skyrocketed and suicide is at an all-time high, physical activity, movement, and sport can play a powerful role in helping every young person find greater purpose in their lives and to socially connect with others.

This talk will explore these themes and the impact that a quality physical education program can have on the social, emotional and physical wellness of the students that we are so fortunate enough to teach on a daily basis.
